The challenge is to find your way safely to a parking space without damaging your car or having a bingle with a stray trolley!

Did you know?

• More than 15% of collision claims in NSW are as the result of bungled parking.
• There were almost 25,000 car park collisions in NSW during 2006/07 (around 500 a week), costing more than $40 million in repairs.

Top tips for parking

• Be alert at all times and watch out for other motorists who may disobey traffic signals, such as one-way signs, or park incorrectly
• If you're reversing in a car park, go slow and don't just rely on your mirrors – look over your shoulder too
• New car technology such as cameras and reverse sensors can help motorists when they are reversing, but drivers still need to be aware of what is around them
• Do your bit to keep the car park free of obstacles and hazards by returning shopping trolleys to their bay
• Use indicators every time you make a turn
• If you're involved in a collision and hit another parked vehicle, do the right thing and leave a note with your details. Think of 'car'-ma
• If you witness a collision, pass on any information you have to the innocent party to help them out
• Don't pull out around cars that are waiting to drive into a parking space – be patient and give them room to move
