Seat/head restraints with marginal or poor geometry aren’t tested dynamically because they cannot protect taller people in rear-end crashes. These seats are rated poor overall.

How we test the head restraints

We rate the restraints using an internationally recognised head restraint measuring procedure. The device we use was initially developed by the Insurance Council of British Columbia but is now utilised by vehicle research facilities worldwide. The device enables two measurements to be made.

One measurement is the horizontal distance between the head restraint and the back of the head form. The other measurement is the vertical distance from the top of the head restraint to the top of the head form. A combination of these measurements, with the head restraint in appropriate positions, is used to derive the rating.
